Welcome to Site Administrator for SharePoint

Quest Site Administrator for SharePoint is an innovative management and reporting solution for Microsoft SharePoint. Using its integrated one-tool approach you will easily discover SharePoint installations; maintain SharePoint resources throughout your organization; enforce server and site settings with policies; and get quick insights into server health and performance, as well as storage and user activity trends.

The following is a list of issues addressed and enhancements implemented in Quest Site Administrator for SharePoint 3.6:

Information Portal Settings - Site Administrator Information Portal has the settings page which allows you to grant additional users rights to view all enterprise and site reports, and set the top number of the content databases and web applications to be displayed in the Information Portal reports.

Site Administrator Information Portal for Site Collection Administrators - The users with the Site Collection Primary or Secondary Administrator roles can access Information Portal to search for the sites in the scope of the site collections and select the report for any site displayed in the search results.

Add Server Farm Wizard Support for SharePoint 2010 - This version of Quest Site Administrator for SharePoint allows you to discover SharePoint server farms by using the Add Server Farm Wizard for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 (July Beta).

Information Portal Support for SharePoint 2010 - Information Portal supports Enterprise and Site reports, Site URL search and delegation for Microsoft SharePoint 2010 (July Beta).

New features in Site Administrator for SharePoint 3.5.2:

Support for SRS 2008 - This version of Site Administrator for SharePoint supports Microsoft SQL Server 2008 Reporting Services as a reporting engine.

When installing Policy Agent remotely on Windows Server 2008, the installation might fail if the Terminal Server is not running on Windows Server 2008. To workaround the issue, copy Policy Agent located in C:\Program Files\Quest Software\Site Administrator for SharePoint\Console\Shgpa.msi to Windows Server 2008, and install it by running the Shgpa.msi file. CR#55983
If both SharePoint 2003 and SharePoint 2007 are installed on the same computer, Site Administrator discovers only the SharePoint 2007 installation.

Quest Site Administrator for SharePoint setup fails, if the installation path contains an acute accent character (`).

The Workspace Page list shortcut does not work for Multipage Meeting Workspace sites.

If you are working with Microsoft SharePoint 2007 and your farm consists of several front-end servers, you may experience the following issue: after you create a document library or a list of any type you are taken back to the New page instead of the newly created page. In this case the new item will be created, and you only need to refresh the Site Administrator console tree to view the new item. CR#21526
If Site Administrator database is locked during Site Administrator upgrade, the upgrade will be reported as successful, but the product will not work. CR#24476
If you open home page of a SharePoint 2007 site in the Site Administrator Management Console, an Internet Explorer Script Error may be displayed. CR#19024

If you right-click a site node prior to selecting it, the site home page will be displayed in right pane irrespective of the item you selected from the shortcut menu.

If you cancel the installation wizard during the upgrade process, the scheduled Data Gathering Task may be lost. CR#24952
If you try uninstalling policy agents from the Site Administrator console, you get an error message. To remove the agents, use the Add/Remove Programs dialog on the local computer. CR#33341
If you specify name of a computer running Microsoft SQL Reporting Services on Microsoft Windows XP in the Reporting Configuration Wizard, you may get an Invalid namespace error. To resolve the issue, specify URL of the Report server instead of computer name. CR#33875
You cannot manage and gather report data from servers discovered by hostheaders. To workaround the issue, log on to the SharePoint server and take the steps described in the Microsoft article available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/281308.

CR#19516

To remove Quest Site Administrator, you should remove both Quest Site Administrator and Policy Manager using the Add/Remove Programs dialog. CR#00000
When logging to Site Administrator, My Site is displayed in the Site Administrator console along with the personal sites of different users. The content of My Site coincides with that of the personal site of the user currently logged on. CR#00000

SharePoint Server Discovery

SharePoint virtual servers that use basic authentication in IIS are not supported in this release.

If a virtual server contains several site collections using different SQL servers, and you do not have access permissions to at least one of these SQL Server, such virtual server will be considered unmanaged. CR#33560
There is an error when showing Workspace Pages List. CR#41598
Front-end servers created with the Extend Web Application to Another IIS site option in SharePoint Central Administration are always considered to be unmanaged. CR#00000
Web Applications based on IIS sites with SSL enabled and host header specified for unsecured access are always considered to be unmanaged. CR#24666

Virtual Servers without site collections are always considered to be unmanaged. CR#20372
If more than one virtual server is installed on a computer and not all the information might have been received from these virtual servers during the discovery, these servers will be displayed with the same name under the Unmanaged Servers node. CR#172033
If anonymous access is enabled for a SharePoint virtual server in IIS, its web sites will not be displayed under the server in the console tree. CR#164839
The discovery process may not stop immediately after you click the Stop button. CR#172045
If you are rediscovering an unmanaged SharePoint server having all necessary permissions, and the domain information for the server is displayed as N/A, the server will be added to the list of managed SharePoint servers, but you will not be able to set up data gathering on the server. To workaround the issue, remove the server both from the Managed and Unmanaged lists and try discovering the server again.
Note: This issue is applicable only to the individual computer scan.

If you specify NLB name of the server for the Individual computer scan, the server will always be displayed as unmanaged. To workaround the issue, use NetBIOS name instead. CR#21472
Discovery of SharePoint servers does not work if you disable NetBIOS.

Reports

If a user has been granted several permissions, including Limited Access, the Site Permission report will not display this permission in SharePoint. CR#00000
If you type I18N characters or full-width digits in the filter fields, you will get an empty report. CR#00000
The Traffic usage and User response time reports will not be available for virtual servers whose IIS logging file format is not W3C Extended Log File Format.

In the Used disk space trend and Storage space distribution reports, site storage space and System data information may be calculated incorrectly. CR#24903

In the Days until critical capacity report, an exaggerated amount of free disk space may be displayed. CR#24904
If you enter account name for the Permission Report in the DNS format, you will get an error message and the report will not be displayed. CR#21534
The account you assign to run the data gathering task should have Read and Read and Execute rights on the scheduled task that invokes the job. The scheduled task is named SPM-Report Data Gathering Task.

CR#163046

If you gather data from a computer where a firewall restricts access to WMI, or where a firewall restricts access to WMI on the computer where the product is installed, the product may gather incomplete data. You will be able to view the reports, but some information may not be available. To resolve this issue, configure your firewall to allow access to WMI. To configure Windows Firewall, take the steps described in the Microsoft article available at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/875605. CR#159468
Reports in the Report Pack may not work if your reporting database is hosted on a remote SQL server. The reason is the use of Integrated Windows authentication in the data source of the report pack by default. If SSL is enabled on a virtual server, reports from the Usage Analysis folder may not be displayed correctly for that server. CR#161222
If you change the name of a Web site extended with SharePoint services in IIS Manager, some user activity information might not be collected from the corresponding virtual server. CR#153752
If you change the Web site identification settings of a virtual server through IIS Manager, the links in the reports may not be correct. CR#154195
When you collect report data from a virtual SharePoint server on several front-end servers, the result of data gathering might be displayed as Success in the Last result column of the Reporting tab, even if one of the front-end servers could not be processed. CR#174099
When you restore a SharePoint server to a new location, previous URL of site collections will be displayed in the reports. CR#182100
The Effective Permission report does not display permissions acquired by the user through local group membership. CR#21242

If Site Administrator uses local Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express and remote Microsoft SQL Reporting Services 2005 (Express Edition), all reports will be unavailable.

Custom Report Wizard fails if Site Administrator for SharePoint repository is on SQL Express. To avoid this problem, use SQL 2005 Standard or Enterprise edition. CR#42945
When clicking to show the Custom Report Wizard menu item, the console is inactive if data gathering has not been completed. Wait until it is completed and click again. CR#42946
Custom Reports and Microsoft SRS Report Builder Model are not supported for Reporting Services in SharePoint integration mode. CR#42960
The Top Search Phrases reports are available only for portal sites. CR#204704
When opening the report created with Site Administrator Custom Report Wizard in the Report Builder, the Prompt box will be clear. CR # 45240
The export of reports containing nested tables (e.g. Site Group Membership reports) to Microsoft Excel is not supported. For more information, please refer to http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms155976.aspx CR#00000
If the MS Arial Unicode font is not available on the machine used to export the Site Permission and the User Permission reports to PDF, the Japanese characters will not be recognized. As a workaround, install the MS Arial Unicode font on the machine hosting Site Administrator console. CR#00000
There are some limitation for SRS 2008 in SharePoint integrated Mode: If reports are created for the SharePoint Server Farm hosting SRS 2008, the following issues might occur:

- the links to the SharePoint hosting the reports might not work;

- the top used content, site content access, site health alert and user activity reports might be unavailable. To workaround the issue, clean up the collected report data and disable report data collection for the SharePoint Farm hosting SRS 2008.

Information Portal
Make sure you specify the correct user credentials during the Information Portal installation. If the user information is incorrect, the setup will fail. In this case, re-install the tool and specify the correct user credentials. CR#00000
Information Portal doesn’t work if install path contains non ASCII symbols. CR#00000
If you work with the information portal for a long time, the Authorization Required page might appear. To workaround the issue, simply refresh the page (F5) once again. CR#00000
Information Portal may not work with Chrome. When trying to open Information Portal in Chrome browser, the "client used wrong authentication scheme: (null) for / (needed NTLM)" error appears in the httpd.log file. CR#00000

Policies

The Alert list for the site lists and Alert list for the site libraries policy settings are not applied if accounts are not explicitly added to the list of site users or if their e-mail addresses are not specified. CR#166633
Most of the Site Collection Use Confirmation and Auto-Deletion policies are not applied to the newly created Microsoft SharePoint 2007 web applications. To resolve the issue, follow these steps:
  1. Open the Central Administration page.
  2. Go to Operations | Global Configuration | Timer Job Definitions.
  3. Click the Dead Site Delete job.
  4. On the Edit Timer Job page, click the Enable button.
CR#24474
In Microsoft SharePoint 2007, the Maximum version age and Maximum item age policies are not applied to default and hidden lists and document libraries. Lists and document libraries created by users are processed as intended. CR#24986
If you apply the Site lock status and Lock reason policy settings to a site collection and the status of the first setting is No access, no other settings will be applied. CR#160080
The Site group permissions policy setting can be applied only for an existing group. CR#163342
If you are not a member of the Local Administrators group on the local computer and do not have administrators rights on the SQL Server, you can install the Policy Agent, but the policies cannot be applied to the servers. CR#180453
If you want to apply the block inherited policies option, select the Block inherited polices check box in the Policy Links tab, then right-click the server node and select Refresh from the shortcut menu. CR#183217
If you add a link to the subsite of the virtual server, one of the links from the Inheritance field will disappear. To resolve the issue, go to this virtual server node, right-click it and select Refresh from the shortcut menu. CR#183349
Alert type for the Alert list for site lists and Alert list for site libraries settings is always displayed as All. However, the policy works exactly as you specified in the policy setting. CR#21445
If you specify account name for the Restricted Site Groups policy in any format, other than the Domain\Username format, the account name will not be resolved.

Site Administrator Policy Manager ignores the Document Library Versioning Settings option enabled on SharePoint 2007. CR#00000
Entering a policy name containing non-alphanumeric characters will cause an error message to appear. CR#00000
The following permissions in Site group permission policy setting might not be managed in SharePoint 2007: View Application Pages within List Permission and Create Groups, Use Self-Service Site Creation, Open within Site Permission. CR#50033

 


Upgrade and Compatibility

This version of Site Administrator for SharePoint supports upgrade from versions 1.5 and higher.

The upgrade scenario is divided in the following steps:

1.        Uninstall all policy agents.

2.        Install the new Site Administrator console using the existing configuration database.
To upgrade from the previous version of Site Administrator console, you should simply run the setup. If the setup detects a previous version of the product, the upgrade wizard will start. During the upgrade you will not be prompted to specify any settings.

Note: The IIS warning of the Install Wizard with the empty requirements list can be ignored.

3.        Install the policy agents to the virtual servers.

After the upgrade, all discovered virtual servers, report data, and policy links will be preserved. However, it is recommended that you do the following:

  1. When upgrading from Site Administrator for SharePoint 3.1 and earlier, update reports: select a report in the console tree and click Next on the Reporting Configuration Wizard page in the right pane.

Note: Microsoft SQL Reporting Services 2000 are no longer supported, so if you were using Reporting Services 2000, you should specify URL of the Reporting Services 2005 Server on the Reporting Configuration Wizard page.

Note: Microsoft SQL Server 2000 is no longer supported. To transfer the data to SQL Server 2005, you should import the SQL Server 2000 configuration database to SQL Server 2005 using SQL Management Studio before starting the upgrade.

Note: Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 with Embedded Edition of Microsoft SQL Server is not supported in this version of Site Administrator for SharePoint.

Note: During the Site Administrator upgrade, the user might be required to remove the previous version of Security Auditor and install the new one. It is not necessary to follow this requirement.

Note: Information Portal is not upgraded automatically when upgrading from Site Administrator for SharePoint 3.5.2 and earlier to 3.6. To upgrade Information Portal, run the setup. After the upgrade, all report links saved before the upgrade will be preserved.

 


System Requirements

Before installing Site Administrator for SharePoint, ensure your system meets the following minimum hardware and software requirements:

Platform For Site Administrator console:
  • Intel® Pentium® 1 GHz processor (x86, x64) or equivalent

For Site Administrator database and Reporting server:

  • Intel® Pentium® 2 GHz processor (x86, x64) or equivalent. Two or more processors are recommended
Memory For Site Administrator console:
  • 512 MB of RAM

For Site Administrator database and Reporting server:

  • 1 GB of RAM (4 GB recommended)
Disk Space For Site Administrator console:
  • ~ 100 MB of available hard disk space for install
  • 200-300 MB of available hard disk space for logs

For Site Administrator database and Reporting server:

  • Disk space depends on the SharePoint content database size
  • 1-5 GB of available hard disk space for temporary tables
Operating System One of the following:
  • Windows Server 2003 SP1 or higher (Recommended)
  • Windows XP SP2 or higher
  • Windows 2003 64-bit
  • Windows Server 2008

Note that for SharePoint front-end servers running Windows 2008, it is required to install IIS 6 WMI compatibility component.

Additional Software Microsoft .Net Framework 3.0

 

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher

 

One of the following:

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 SP1 or later SPs (remote or local)
  • Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express SP1 or later SPs (remote or local)

Global Operations

This section contains information about installing and operating this product in non-English configurations, such as those needed by customers outside of North America. This section does not replace the materials about supported platforms and configurations found elsewhere in the product documentation.

This release is Unicode-enabled and supports any character set. It supports simultaneous operation with multilingual data. This release is targeted to support operations in the following regions: North America, Western Europe and Latin America, Central and Eastern Europe.
