Since the System State data of an Active Directory domain controller contains a copy of the Active Directory database, it is important to backup your domain controllers often to reduce the opportunity for lost information. 

It's a best practice to backup at least two domain controllers from each domain to simplify restore of deleted objects, and to back up domain controllers hosting important domain and forest roles in case of a more significant disaster.
